Where to find help

The Victorian Obesity Consortium (VOC) works to raise the awareness about the seriousness of obesity and metabolic diseases, promoting prevention and lobbying for better standards of care. The VOC is also a significant contributor to research into better treatments for obesity and the search for prevention.

The VOC is committed to turning obesity around through awareness, prevention, and management.

The VOC is not a referral service. If you or someone you know is in need of medical help please make contact with your local GP or see alternative services below.

Childhood obesity is a significant health issue, both in Australia and around the world. In Australia, almost 1 in 5 children between the ages of 5 and 17 years are categorised as „overweight‟ and close to 1 in 10 is classified as obese. Lvels of obesity are likely to result in the current generation of children having shorter life expectancies than their parents. Obesity has long-term health and psychosocial consequences, with obese children significantly more likely to become obese adults. Because established obesity is very difficult to treat, efforts should be made early in life to the prevention of overweight, obesity and their complications.

If you or your child are worried about their weight and associated health issue you should seek help immediately. There are many good sources of help within Victoria, some are listed below.
